Haggis Surname Meaning

From Middle English hag-house, the term perhaps denotes a woodcutter's hut or a house in a clearing where wood felling took place. Compare Hagg. Some of the following post-medieval bearers may alternatively belong with (2).

The Scottish name is derived from one of the many places in central Scotland called Haggis, evidently from hag-house, which means 'a shed or outhouse' as noted in the Dictionary of the Scots Language, or 'a place for storing firewood' according to the OED.

It may also have denoted a woodcutter's hut. This surname is no longer found in Scotland but may have reinforced the English name through migration.
