Graystock Family History
Graystock Surname Meaning
From Greystoke (Cumb) which is recorded as Creistoc in 1167, Crekestoc in 1171–5, and Graystock in 129. The place-name derives from Old English stoc ‘place, secondary settlement’ with an obscure first element.
It is possibly a lost Celtic river-name identical with the name of the River Cray (Kent) or perhaps, if the unique 12th-century spelling Crekestoc is trustworthy, Old Welsh creic ‘hill’ taken as a place-name.
