Grayhurst Family History
Grayhurst Surname Meaning
Probably from a lost place in Hasland (Derbys), recorded as Grehurst in 1086 and Grayhirst and Greyhyrst in the 13th century. The place-name derives from Old English grǣg ‘grey’ + hyrst ‘hillock copse’.
However, no medieval bearers of the surname have been found, and so it may have an alternative origin; perhaps a variant of Greathurst with loss of -t-.
