English (Devon of Norman origin): from Middle English gratour grater ‘grater’ (Old French grateor gratour gratier) either ‘person who grates’ (perhaps a furbisher) or ‘implement for grating bread, spices, etc.’

Hence, an occupational name for a furbisher or a metonymic occupational name for a maker of grating implements.
