Grassby Family History
Grassby Surname Meaning
from Grasby (Lincs) which is recorded as Grosebi Grosbi in 1086 Gressebi in 1165 and Greseby in 121. The place-name derives from Old Scandinavian bý ‘farmstead settlement’ with a very uncertain first element.
It is possibly either Old Scandinavian grjót (genitive grjóts) ‘gravel stones’ or the Old French personal name Gros(se).
This connection is further supported by the comparison to Gross (2), although neither option fully accords with the complete range of early spellings.
