Occupational name for a goat herd from Middle English gote ‘goat’ + the suffix -ier. Perhaps occasionally a nickname from Middle English gode ‘good’ + chere ‘face’ (Old French chier) for someone with a pleasant or cheerful appearance.

In some cases, possibly also an Anglicized form of French Gautier.
