Ukrainian, Rusyn, Belorussian, and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): from Ukrainian Rusyn and Belorussian holub ‘dove’ (Russian-oriented transliteration golub) a variant of Holub and a cognate of 2 below. As a Rusyn surname it is also found in Serbia (Vojvodina). Compare Gollub.
Croatian and Serbian; Sorbian (Gołub): from Croatian and Serbian golub Lower Sorbian gołub ‘pigeon dove’ hence a nickname for a mild-mannered or peace-loving person or a metonymic occupational name for someone who bred or looked after doves which were reared as egg-layers and for food in the Middle Ages.
Polish (also Gołub): variant of Gołąb ‘dove’ (see Golab compare 1 above).
