English (Hampshire): habitational name a shortened form of Glastonbury from the place in Somerset named in Anglo-Saxon times as ‘the fortified place (Old English burg) of the Glæstingas’.

The Glæstingas were the people of Glastonia, a Celtic name probably meaning ‘woad place’.
