Gatt Family History

Gatt Surname Meaning

Scottish (Aberdeenshire): variant of Galt. An alternative derivation from Older Scots gate gait gaet get(t) (Old Norse gata) ‘way road path; street’ (see Gates) is theoretically possible but there is no evidence to link this to any of the historical bearers of the name in the British Isles.

South German: from a short form of an ancient Germanic personal name formed from the same root as the Middle High German word gate ‘companion compatible person’.
