Gamston Family History
Gamston Surname Meaning
from Gamston near Eaton (Notts) or Gamston in West Bridgford (Notts) both of which are recorded as Gamelestune in 1086 and derive from the Old Scandinavian personal name Gamall (with Middle English genitive -es) + Old English tūn ‘farmstead estate’. The former appears later as Gameston in 1541 Gambston in 1586 and Gampstone in 1686 and the latter as Gamston in 1585 and Gamson in 1710.
One or other of the Notts place-names is certainly one source of the surname Gamson and perhaps of Gameson but its migration to the W Midlands is unproven and the following post-medieval bearers in that region may alternatively belong under (2).
possibly a variant of Gameson (2) with intrusive -t-.
