from one or other of the places in Scotland called Fordie such as Fordie alias Lawers in Monzievaird and Mains of Fordie in Caputh (both Perths) and Fordie in Kincardine O'Neil (Aberdeens). The Perths place-names are of uncertain origin.

The place in Caputh appears as Fordouin between 1153 and 1161 in Dunfermline Register and that in Monzievaird as Fordef 1444 in Edinburgh Register. They may contain the Gaelic prefix for- ‘above’ or ‘big’.

The Aberdeens name may be Scots for ‘little ford’.
