North German and Dutch: topographic name for someone living near a distinctive elder from Middle Low German vleder, Middle Dutch vliedere, vleer, fleer, Dutch vlier ‘elder’; possibly also a metonymic occupational name for a pharmacist who was known for his use of eldersyrup as a healing tincture.
