The place-name derives from Old Scandinavian ‘farmstead settlement’ with an uncertain first element, possibly Old Scandinavian fioðer ‘four’ (earlier *feðuru).

Alternatively, it could derive from Old English feðer or Old Scandinavian fjǫðr ‘feather’.
