From Framilode in Saul (Gloucs) which is recorded as Framilade in 1086, Fromilode in 1236, and Framlode in 142. The place-name means ‘crossing over or near the River Frome’, deriving from Old English ge-lād ‘difficult river-crossing’ qualified by the river-name Frome.
Frome, which is recorded as aqua de Frome in 1248, is a Celtic river-name (see Froom). The crossing itself, near to the point where the Frome joins the Severn, may have been across either river.
