Altered form of English Fanshaw which is perhaps a habitational name from Fanshaw Gate in Holmesfield (Derbyshire) which is recorded as le Faunchallegatehede in 1456 and Fawnchallegate in 147.

However, this place may take its name from a surname such as Faunchall or Fanshaw, and not the other way about.

In some cases possibly also an altered form of French Fanger.
