Ezekiel Surname Meaning

English Welsh Jewish African American and African (mainly Nigeria and Tanzania): from the Biblical personal name Ezekiel from Hebrew Yeḥezqel meaning ‘God will strengthen’. It was borne by a prophet for whom the Book of Ezekiel is named.

In the British Isles this is found not only as a Jewish surname but also as a comparatively late surname among Nonconformists especially in Wales and Devon.

The name Ezekiel is also found among Christians in southern India, but since South Indians traditionally do not have hereditary surnames, the southern Indian name was in most cases registered as such only after immigration of its bearers to the US.
