French (mainly northern; also Durié): variant of Durier (and in North America an altered form of this) itself an altered form of Duriez, a topographic name with fused preposition and definite article du ‘from the’ from Old French ries ‘uncultivated land’; or a habitational name for someone from Le Riez, the name of several places in the north of France.
