French and West Indian (mainly Haiti): habitational name with fused preposition d(e) ‘from’ denoting someone from any of several places in France called Orival (from Latin aurea vallis ‘golden valley’) in Charente, Somme, and Seine-Maritime.
This surname was brought to the US mostly from Haiti, where it is most common and where it may actually be an ornamental name (see Dorval).
