Cambodian: written ឌិន corresponding to the Khmer word of Thai origin meaning ‘tinsel’. Chinese: variant Romanization of the surname 丁 see Ding.

Jewish (Ashkenazic): nickname from Yiddish din ‘thin’. Scottish (Aberdeenshire): perhaps from a pet form of the personal name Dinis, a variant of Denis.

According to Black, this is an old Strathblane surname “frequent in Fintry in the 17th and 18th centuries”.
