Indian (northern states): from Sanskrit deva ‘deity lord’. This was a title used by ruling families in northern India. There is a Jat tribe called Deo. In northeastern India, this name is spelled and pronounced Deb. Elsewhere a common variant is Dev.
Italian: from a short form of the personal names Amadeo, Laudadeo, or Sperindeo, of which only the first now remains in use as a personal name.
