American shortened (and altered) form of any of various Greek and Slavic derivatives such as Greek patronymics Demetropoulos and Dimitropoulos of local variants of the Greek personal name Dēmētrios (see Dimitris).
Americanized form of Italian Dimitri or of its cognate Dimitrio. In North America, this surname also originated from a transferred use of the personal (given) name Demetrius (Latinized form of a South Slavic or modern Greek name derived from Greek Dēmētrios) as a surname (i.e. as a replacement of the original surname).
