Irish: variant of Dever. Perhaps an altered form of German Düwer Düver from Middle Low German dūver ‘male pigeon’ hence a nickname for someone thought to resemble the bird or a metonymic occupational name for a dove keeper.

Possibly an Americanized form of Dutch Diever a habitational name referring to the village so called in the Drenthe province.
