Perhaps from Coldshaw in Chadderton (Lancs) but more likely a variant of Culcheth. Compare Kilshaw and Kelshaw. The surname appears late in Staffs and may have been falsely associated with Coldshaw near Hollinsclough (Staffs) or Colshaw in Quarnford (Staffs).

For no evidence has been found of a surname from either Staffs place-name which are not on record before 1429 and 1566 respectively.
