Either from Claverley (Shrops) recorded as Claverlege in 1086, Clareley in 1361, Clorley in 1550, Clearly in 1698, and Cloverley in 1837, or from Cloverley in Ightfield parish near Calverhall (Shrops), recorded as a surname Clouerlegh' in 1291-2 and as a place-name Cloreley in 1434 and Cloverley als Cloreley in 1686.
Both place-names denoted ‘clearing or woodland-pasture where clover grows’ from Old English clǣfre (in Claverley) and clāfre (in Cloverley) + lēah.
The surnames Claverley, Clarely, and Clearly are from Claverley only, but Clorely and Cloverley could be from either.
