Clapham is especially frequent in WR Yorks and derives from Clapham (spelled Claypham 1421 in Place-Names of WR Yorks VI p. 232) near the border with Lancs. The village is five miles west of Giggleswick where Claphamson had already proliferated by the mid-16th century.

Pronunciation of Claphamson is frequently weakened to Clappinson Clappison and Clapson. Bearers of the name apparently migrated to Lancs ER Yorks Lincs Northants London and possibly Kent.
