Clachan Family History

From any of various minor places called Clachan such as those in Argyll and Perths and especially that in Ayrs named with Scottish Gaelic clachan ‘stone hut’.

Alternatively, the name can be found with the same word borrowed into Scots.

This borrowed term takes on the additional meaning of ‘hamlet’ or ‘small settlement’.

Often, these small settlements are located near a church, referred to as a kirktoun.

Thus, the term Clachan encompasses both geographical and cultural significance in Scottish history.
