English (southeastern): nickname from Middle English Criste(s)masse -messe ‘Christmas Day’ also ‘the Christmas season’ perhaps for someone who was born at Christmas or one who played the part of the King of Christmas in Yuletide games.

The name was also established in County Waterford Ireland in 162 Americanized form (translation into English) of French Noël (see Noel).
