Chettleburgh Family History
Chettleburgh Surname Meaning
Perhaps a variant of Kettleborough in which an original pronunciation with initial /ʧ/ has been retained. For possible early bearers see (2). Alternatively from Chedburgh (Suffolk). The place-name is recorded as Cedeberia in 1086, Cheddeberg in 1254, and Chedeberwe in 1275 and means ‘Cedda's hill’ from the Old English personal name *Cedda + beorg ‘hill mound.
A surname corresponding to these place-name spellings is on record in the 13th and 14th centuries. Later surname forms like Chetylber' (1424) may reflect a variant of the place-name with an intrusive -l- and devoicing of -d- to -t- recorded in Chedelberge (14th cent.), Chetelb' (1340), and Chetylbere (1444).
This altered pronunciation could be attributable to influence from the Suffolk place-name Kettleburgh and the derived surname in (1).
