Chettle Family History
Chettle Surname Meaning
From a Middle English personal name Chetel *Chetil (from late Old English Cytel *Cetel *Cetil an anglicization of Old Scandinavian Ketill). See Kettle.
Perhaps from Middle English chetel chetil ‘kettle cooking pot’ (Old English cetel) possibly for one who made, sold, or used such utensils, but this is speculative.
Perhaps also from Chettle (Dorset), which is recorded as Ceotel in 1086, Chetel in the 12th century, and Chetil in 1288.
The place-name derives from Old English cetel, ceotel ‘kettle, cooking-vessel; deep valley, hollow’.
However, no evidence of early bearers with the locative preposition de ‘of, from’ has come to light, and those cited here may belong to (1).
