Spanish and Portuguese: from cerda ‘bristle hair’ (from Late Latin cirra) apparently a nickname for someone with a prominent tuft of hair.
One of the sons of King Alfonso X (1221–84) was known as Fernando de la Cerda.
Catalan (Cerdà): habitational name cerdà for someone from La Cerdanya, a Catalan district in the Pyrenees which is situated partly in Spain and partly in France.
