Americanized form of German Kassler. English: perhaps a habitational name from any of several places in Cumbria called Castle Howe from Middle English castel ‘castle earthwork’ + howe ‘mound’ (Old Norse haugr).

Alternatively, it could be a topographic or occupational name from Middle English casteler ‘dweller or worker at a castle’.
