Dutch and North German: variant of Kampen and in North America (also) an altered form of this. English (Essex of Norman origin): variant of Campion or Campain.

The latter is a habitational name from any of several places in Pas-de-Calais and elsewhere in France named Campagne or from a Norman form of a habitational name from Champagne in northeastern France.

Americanized form of Norwegian Kampen.
