English (Lincolnshire of Norman origin): from Old French bigot possibly meaning ‘beggar’. At the time of the Norman Conquest Bigot was already used both as a hereditary nickname and a personal name in Normandy by a noble family from Loges in Calvados.
Uncomplimentary nicknames were not uncommon among high ranking Normans.
