Serbian and Croatian (Burić): patronymic from Buro which may be a short form of the old personal name Burislav (composed of the elements bur from buriti se ‘to stir up’ + slav from slava ‘glory’) or a nickname for a big-bellied man derived from the root of burav ‘bellied’.

Croatian (Burić): nickname derived from bura ‘north wind’ (see Bura) and given to a child born when this wind was blowing.
