Buckton Family History

Buckton Surname Meaning

Probably from Buckton in ER Yorks (rather than Herefs or Northumb) or possibly from Buckden in WR Yorks (rather than Hunts). Redmonds Dictionary of Yorks Surnames notes that a 16th-century family in Marsk (Swaledale NR Yorks) was known as both Buckton and Buckden. For possible medieval forms see Boughton.

Compare Bugden. The Yorks place-names are from Old English bucc in the genitive plural with -a ‘buck’ or bucca ‘he-goat’ + tūn ‘farm village’ and denu ‘valley’.
