Altered form of French Brûlot: habitational name from (Le) Brûlot, the name of several places mainly in the western part of France, or a topographic name from a derivative of brûlé ‘burnt’ (see Brule).

Altered ending reflects the Canadian and American French practice of sounding the final -t. The surname Brûlot (or Brulot) is very rare in France.
