Brickman Family History

Brickman Surname Meaning

Jewish (Ashkenazic): from Yiddish brik ‘bridge’ (altered by folk etymology in English-speaking countries as if derived from English brick) + man ‘man’; possibly an artificial name or an occupational name for a bridgekeeper. Compare Bruckman. Americanized form of German Brückmann ‘bridgekeeper’ (see Bruckman) and of its variant Brickmann.

English: of uncertain origin. The second element is clearly Middle English man(n) ‘man’ but it is unclear if the first element is related to the names Brich, Brick or Bryce or to some other origin.

Americanized form of Slovenian Bricman: from an old vernacular form formed with the suffix -man ‘man’ of German origin of the personal name Bric (from Latin Bricius or Brictius; see Brice).
