Perhaps it also originates from Bowcote in North Nibley or Bowcote Knoll in Uley (both Gloucs), which are recorded as Bollecote in the 13th century, or from other similarly named places.

The Gloucs place-names derive from Old English cot ‘cottage’, with an uncertain first element, perhaps bol ‘tree-trunk, stump, log’.
