The place-name 'Botcherby' (Cumb) is derived from the Norman French given name Bochard combined with the Old Scandinavian bȳ, meaning ‘farm village’. Alternatively, given that the post-medieval distribution of the surname is predominantly found in Durham, it may represent an altered form of Butterby, an obsolete surname originating from Butterby (Durham).

Butterby, which can also be spelled as Botterbie or Botterbe, has historical connections with Botcherby. These names occasionally appear in the same settlements as noted in the IGI and the Census 1881.
