Polish; Slovak (mainly Boďo): perhaps from a pet form of the Old Slavic personal name Ostrobod composed of the elements ostr (from the adjective ostrъ ‘sharp’) + bod (derivative of the verb bosti ‘to stab to prick’). As a Polish name it may alternatively be a surname of German origin (see 3 below).

German: from the German personal name Bodo a derivative of Old Saxon bodo ‘messenger leader’. This surname is also found in France (Lorraine).

Italian: from the personal name Bodo of ancient Germanic origin (see 3 above).

French: variant of Bodeau. Altered form of French Thibodeau.
