German: from the ancient Germanic personal name Beriberht composed of the elements bero ‘bear’ + berht ‘bright famous’. German: alternatively in Franconia a topographic name from Middle High German ber ‘bear’ + berc ‘mountain hill’.

In some cases probably also an Americanized form of Serbian or Croatian (or possibly Bosniak) Berberić: patronymic from Berber. The surname Berberić is rare in Serbia and very rare in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
