Jewish (Sephardic): variant of Abendana a surname adopted at the beginning of the 17th century in Western Europe by former Catholic migrants from Spain who returned to Judaism the religion of their ancestors.
The name is derived from Abendanan (with Arabic vernacular aben ‘son’ + uncertain second part) the surname used by Spanish Jews before the end of the 15th century.
