Beckerleg Family History
Beckerleg Surname Meaning
Perhaps from Lake, a hamlet in Lifton (Devon), where the surname de Bykelak is recorded in 133. The place-name, which first occurs as Lake in 1504-15, could be an elliptical form of Bikelake denoting a stream (Old English lacu) associated with a man called Bica.
The personal name was not uncommon in pre-Conquest Devon and is very likely the first element of two of the places in Devon called Bickleigh.
See Bickley, with which there may have been early confusion with de Bikelak.
