unexplained. On the face of it possibly topographical from or related to dialectal bog(g)le-hole ‘hobgoblin's lair’ but this is a word of N England and Scotland.
Beagle or baigle is common dialect for ‘scarecrow grotesquely dressed figure’ ‘troublesome person’ including in the south-west but the relevance of this in the name as a unit is unclear.
