Polish, Ukrainian, Serbian, Croatian, Bosniak, and Slovak: from a shortened form of Basarab, an ethnic name for someone from Bessarabia, now Moldova, or in a transferred sense, for a Wallachian (see Vlachos). This surname is very rare in Slovakia and may be of Rusyn origin there (compare Basarab).

Polish: alternatively, perhaps a nickname derived from the dialect word basior ‘male wolf’, basiora ‘inflorescence’, or basiora ‘sheep or ram’.

Turkish (Başara): ornamental name or nickname derived from başarmak ‘to succeed’. Compare Basar.
