In the Midlands and East Anglia, this is based on the Scandinavian personal name Biǫrn anglicized as Beorn; in the south-west, it is from Old English Beorn; both names are from a word meaning ‘warrior’. From Middle English barn (Old Scandinavian barn) ‘child’. This term is found in Domesday Book as a byname for men of the upper classes; it might also have had the meaning ‘young man of a prominent family’ like Middle English child (see Child).
