From the Middle English personal name Bern Barn. In the Midlands and East Anglia, this is based on the Scandinavian personal name Biǫrn anglicized as Beorn; in the south-west, it is from Old English Beorn; both names are from a word meaning ‘warrior’. Some of the following surname bearers may alternatively belong with other senses below.

From Middle English barn (Old Scandinavian barn) ‘child’. This term is found in Domesday Book as a byname for men of the upper classes; it might also have had the meaning ‘young man of a prominent family’ like Middle English child (see Child).
