Barlas Family History
Barlas Surname Meaning
Scottish (Perthshire): habitational name probably from Barloch near Milngavie (Stirlings) + post-medieval excrescent -s. The final syllable of Barloch will alternatively have been pronounced -low and -lie in Scots whence a variety of attested surname forms including Barlow, Barlows, Barlie, Barliss, Barles(s), and Barlas(s), mostly clustering in settlements near Blackruthven in Tibbermore parish (Perthshire) where the surname Barloche is first recorded in 1589.
Greek: probably a nickname derived from parla 'blabbering' (from Italian parlare 'to talk'). Alternatively, perhaps a nickname derived from Aromanian bărliv 'tormented, long-suffering'.
Slovak (Barlaš and Barláš): unexplained.
Turkish: ornamental name from Barlas, the name of the Mongolian (later Turkicized) tribe of which Tamerlane's father was a member, from Mongolian barlas 'brave'.
Pakistani: from the Muslim personal name Barlas of Mongolian origin (see 4 above).
