North German and Dutch: topographic name for someone who lived by a birch tree or in a birch wood from berke ‘birch’, or alternatively for someone who lived on a mountain (see Barg). Compare Berk.

Dutch: possibly from a pet form of the personal name Barnhard (see Bernhard). Compare Berk.

Polish: nickname from bark ‘shoulder’.
