Bangladeshi and Indian (Rajasthan): Rajput name from Marwari banna a term used to denote courtiers close to (but not related to) the king. It was originally a caste name of the Mair or Mer tribe of the Rajputana who eventually acquired Rajput (warrior) status along with material prosperity due to their close relationship with royalty.
