Bambridge Family History
Bambridge Surname Meaning
From a Middle English bem-briğğe ‘tree-bridge’, which refers to one formed by a felled tree or made of wooden beams, or from a place called this, such as Beambridge in Worleston (Cheshire). This is recorded as le Bembrugg in 1302–6.
Additionally, there are the locations Beam Bridge and Dagenham Beam Bridge, both situated in Dagenham (Essex). The latter is documented in the 13th century as pontem voc. Dagenham Beem.
Comparing other locations, we note Beam, Trowbridge, and Bamford, as well as the place names Thelbridge (Devon) and Elbridge (Shrops).
In NE England, there is a variant of Bainbridge. In Ireland, it possibly stems from Banbridge in Co Down.
